A couple of years ago, a Japanese company called Aladdin X released a digital projector, and it included a fun little fruit game called Suika Game as part of its software. Suika Game was so well received by people who bought the projector that the company decided to port a version of it to Switch, but the game launched there to almost no audience response. Then, two years later, it randomly became a viral sensation in Japan after a few streamers made it popular. Now it’s quietly made its way to the eShop outside of Japan, and while it’s admittedly very basic, it’s hard to say that Suika Game lacks appeal.
Suika Game could best be described as “2048 with physics”. You drop fruit onto a board, with the goal of getting matching fruits to touch so they fuse into a bigger fruit, granting you extra points. The tough part comes in with the way that the fruits don’t neatly stack on each other. Each new fruit dropped in will roll around a bit and usually push others out of the way, often blocking access to fruits beneath it. Inevitably, this causes the board to fill up all the way and then you have to start all over.
It's an incredibly simple, yet addictive gameplay setup. There’s something quite relaxing and mildly strategic about just taking your time to plan out your fruit drops, and it can be quite thrilling when some fruit further down in the board fuses and sets off a chain reaction that travels all the way back up to the top. Over time, you get a sense of how to better optimize your placement, and it’s extremely tough to resist trying one more time when you top out yet again. [Note. After launching with all text in Japanese, an update has since added English, Chinese (Simplified), and Korean language support.]
That all said, Suika Game is also a peak example of ‘you get what you pay for’. For three bucks, it's a straightforward, score-based puzzle game that’s a decent option for when you’ve got a few minutes to kill. There aren’t any other modes or unlockables, no additional levels, and there’s only one music track that plays on repeat. The highly replayable gameplay still makes this one last for a decent amount of time, but this is about as simplistic and barebones as a puzzle game can get. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but those looking for more meat may want to go for something like Baba Is You, one of the numerous Picross games, or another Switch puzzler.
For its presentation, Suika Game uses a cutesy art style characterized by bright colors and happy little faces on all the fruits that you drop in. They don’t leave a huge impression, but the visuals at least help to keep repeated attempts pleasant. And though that one music track can get a little grating over longer play sessions, it helps to add to that cuddly vibe the developers were clearly shooting for.
Suika Game is a competent and addictive little puzzler that does a great job of executing a very simple concept. There’s not a whole lot to it, but considering it's roughly the same price as a pack of gum, Suika Game is definitely worth the cost of admission. If you’re looking for a quick time waster to add to your Switch library, we’d recommend you pick it up.

Seems about fair. Just a fun little time waster to play in-between other stuff. Priced fairly for what it is.
Got it a week or so ago and have been enjoying it. I like the song, graphics, and gameplay. It's nothing like Grindstone, Flipon, Tetris Effect, or other full games, but it's fun as a basic and simple package. Interesting how YouTube launched this game into high sales orbit. I think games like Mario Maker, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and others get increased sales due to all the free advertising of youtubers and twitchers.
@SwitchVogel
Thanks for the mini-review! I agree it’s a fun little game. I picked it up for pocket change off of the Jpn eShop on Tuesday, and my girls have played more of it than Mario Wonder at this point!
In your opening, isn’t what you meant to say “it’s hard to deny Suika Game has appeal,” rather than “lacks” it?
@Teksetter I missed that — thanks for the spot.
It's very addictive. I got hooked on it.
I‘m curious what the NL review score for the original Tetris on NES and Gameboy would be. It could have the same Pros and Cons, but lacks the „Cutesy visuals“, while offering 3 BGMs. So a 6/10?
Is this touch screen or button control?
Asking because I hate getting my OLED screen all smudgy.
While I can't say I've particularly understood why it got so popular so quickly, I do love me a good puzzle game so I'll probably pick this up once I've amassed a decent amount of Gold Points (currently spent almost all of them on a Capcom Arcade Stadium buying binge XD)
@msvt It has button controls.
this game should absolutely be nominated for Game of the Year!!
it does everything right where a big portion of the market does not!! it's super fun, buy it!!!!!!!
2048 is one of my favorite short games on 3ds. Do I just bought this game because of the cheap price. The review is spot on. It’s fun but short and simple. And yes, after one listen, the music has to be turned off. A nice part is watching the fruit slowly settle and hope for a match.
@Fizza Streamers are the reason. One will play it and get let’s say 3000 and now another streamer starts streaming trying to beat that 3000 and eventually they beat it and the first streamer tries to beat that score and then from there other streamers join the trend and now you have millions of people watching fruits fall into a container and watching them merge
@dartmonkey I think it should be mentioned in the review that this game is only in Japanese, and might require some research to translate it into English. I’ve read the other articles that mention this, but the review might need it for people that only read reviews.
...At least this one doesn't freeze on me when I'm actually doing good. lol
@Impossibilium Thank you. I was going to ask why the version reviewed is NA but the version depicted is Japanese. It turns out the NA version is depicted.
Rip TOTK, starfield, Pikmin 4, spiderman 2, Future redeemed, gollum and Baldurs gate 3 . Watermelon game is sweeping
Bought this game at 11 pm yesterday and played it till 1 am. Also played it today for 3 hours
Send help
Mario Party 10 on Wii U has a game like this but in reverse. When two balls touch, they get smaller.
Agreed with the review - this is easily worth $3 and a fun little distraction. I wish they'd put a minimal amount of effort into localization (just put English text on the "Start" and "Scores" and "How to Play" buttons, for example), and there is uncertainty around the name, which is Suika Game in the eShop but Watermelon Game once it's on your Switch console.
@JJtheTexan Suika means Watermelon.
It's simple, but it's addicting and cheap. Only problem is that my wife has conquered my Switch
I hope it makes them all billionaires. I love this game. 🥰
Sorry but I will always need to correct the usage of "2048" as a genre label when it's the inferior game that blatantly ripped off Threes.
It's good fun and a fair price as others have said. However, for a puzzle game, there's just too much luck involved for my liking. The game needs further refining before I'm going to spend any more time on it.
Have you tried just dropping the fruit without any movement from side to side? It's quite eye opening to see how high a score you can achieve doing this... and highlights my point.
Out of curiosity, what do each menu bubbles mean? Or does nothing really matter but the top one and we should just pick it?
@AG_Awesome One teaches you the rules and one is just an overview of your personal and the global rankings. Those are separated in daily, monthly and all time.
@BTB20 Thank you! So is the top most one the main arcade mode kinda choice? Or is that the second one?
@AG_Awesome Just press A. I can't read or speak Japanese either. The top one is the game itself.
No! It should be 10 / 10!

Pretty helpful translation guide.
@Princess_Lilly @Discokuningas Love your posts! I have been having a blast with it too and my wife has been watching me play. Watermelon Game is the new Tetris! 😉
@BTB20 indeed it does; I watch a lot of Vtubers so I picked up on that. Just thought it strange that the game has a different name in the eShop vs. on the console.
@120frames-please I definitely believe in this! Shame most companies do everything they can to kill that initial buzz!
@nocdaes I've tried to do that, but eventually get too tempted by a good match! I can see why people like this game, and can also understand why others bounce off it.
Really nice game, i wouldn't say 2048 with phisics.. (since 2048 is a ripoff of threes), but Threes mixed with Badge Arcade... since it really feels like a seaside-resort-cheating-crane-coin-eater...
(in dutch that would haven been one word;))
Maybe good to add people really shoud search "SUIKA" in the app store, watermelon doesn't find it
@Impossibilium I’ve added a note. 👍
I do wish this had more than the one music track that doesn't even tend to last an single game (unless you really mess up I guess). But other than that, this is a great little game!
